It would be relatively easy for the USA to cut it’s carbon footprint rapidly. The pols have turned it into an issue just because it’s easy to blame the “others” for job losses that are actually due to automation and offshoring – both of which have been praised and promoted by Republican leadership.
Gimme five billion dollars, I’d set it up as a flat subsidy to anyone operating a coal plant to convert it to natural gas – which cuts carbon emissions by more than half for the same power generation.
The next stage of that program should be setting up ARES type energy storage units across the southern tier of states where solar and wind are most generated (yes, in Kansas and Oklahoma too) thus providing the actual infrastructure to SUPPORT wind and solar as primary sources. That’s a major bottleneck that nobody wants to fund.
And finally, I’d work on persuading LIBERALS to listen to science, which has been telling them how to have safe and clean nuclear power for about 60 years now, and how to safely dispose of the waste. Unhappily, nuclear energy is the global warming of liberals, and we can’t afford any more anti science attitudes on EITHER SIDE OF THE AISLE!
Clay’s got this toon dead to rights, it’s way past time for action, not ideology
