It’s sad to lose one person the way it happened. So much sadder that so many others are overlooked by communities, government, the media, law enforcement, neighbors, and even family.
“ Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” John Donne .
Well, in the first place, they found her BODY. But skip that.
It’s true that “the media” (whatever the heck THAT means, exactly) is about making money for owners by providing credulous eyeballs to their advertisers. And it’s true that they have found it profitable to pay much more attention to missing white folk (particularly good looking young women) than to others who go missing. And it’s also true that what they do does somewhat shape the culture that they’re selling to.
Until the culture changes, though, it’s going to be like that, because if they tried to do a big story about a non-white woman who was probably raped and probably murdered … and missing, their bosses wouldn’t run it because they, presumably, know their audience. That’s sad, but it’s normal. And THAT is sad all over again.
Today I said I give up, there is nothing I can to make a difference. Humans are just too awful to try to change or figure out. It seems really difficult to some just to do the right thing.
