Nylons can be very tempting to a kitty.

Just got a new in the box DELUXE cat tree last night.Putting it together this weekend.Going to time how long it takes Madame to sniff it, ignore it and go to my Laz-e-boy for scratches.

The biggest mistake most people make is buying one that is kitten-sized. The post should be carpeted as high as the cat can stretch as an adult . The height of a cat’s scratch/scent marks tells other cats how big it is, so they prefer to scratch as high as possible.

If you got it as an afterthought, you are going to have to pin aluminum foil to places where furniture was scratched to get the cat to use the cat tree. It looks ugly for a while but worth it during the training period.

You should get a water spritzer and use it in combination with the command “No” until the cat makes the association and you can remind it with just “No”.

One cat scratching place in a house is not enough. I have posts or scratching pads in both bedrooms and the living room. You CANNOT teach cats NOT to scratch; it is part of their being. You CAN persuade them to scratch in designated areas.

I’ve been a “cat whisperer” for fifty years. Communication and consistency are the keys. You do not want to frighten your cat; flying into a rage is not helpful. It stops being a learning experience the second they remove their claws from the furniture. Correction has to be communicated while the scratching is happening.

I have seen people try to lecture cats. I have seen some pretty dumb people.

When my husband was doing dishes at tge kitchen sink, our kitten came up behind him and ran up the back of his legs. Luckily he had on long pants and i can still hear the scream.
