My high school was formed pulling students from an all white school and an all “Mexican” school to form a new school. There were occasional problems, but at least big fights were with bike chains as the weapons, not guns, but hey we’re rare.
Being in track and cross country in meets all over like in Compton relays, Long Beach, and many opportunities to make friends in pretty much all racial groups, we got along fine, because athletics was our mutual bond for friendship, and building understanding. It’s the one big advantage for intramural sports, other than “ball sports” where bashing the other guys is the main objective.
