I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey last week, and afterward a bonus feature about its making. The film’s makers said that the reason they had HAL sing “Daisy” during the climactic disconnect scene was because it was the song scientists had been using at the time in their early experiments working on voice synthesis. Vowel sounds are easiest to reproduce, and that tune apparently emphasizes them quite a bit.

This reminds me of the Warner Bros. cartoon in which a construction worker who uncovers a box and discovers a singing and dancing frog.
