Before digital cameras, those were the only way people could make their own dirty pictures without some photo clerk seeing, making copies.
Or you could spend a lot of money for your own darkroom equipment.

Developing and printing your own pictures was not too hard or expensive if you were content with only black and white and no enlargements.
