    The enmity and entrenched positions are such obstacles, that just getting Palestinian and Israeli representatives to meet is an accomplishment. By comparison, the Korean and Vietnam war treaty negotiations were easier.

    Oh, they had this bit of… trouble… in the Dardanelles, during WW I. Funny little place called Gallipoli. Not at all funny to the Kiwis and Aussies, who lost a lot of their men in an incredibly stupid and inept campaign.
    A vital touchpoint in history, as outlined by Barbara Tuchman in The Guns of August was that a small German battle fleet, just hours before the declaration of war, sailed past the British fleet and through the Dardanelles. Camped offshore in Constantinople, their guns pointing at the palace, Turkey was compelled to join the Axis. As a result, Russia lost it’s warm water port and could not be resupplied. If war had been declared just a few hours earlier, and the German fleet prevented from entering the Dardanelles… it would be a far, far different world today.
