Everyone’s at it though. Not sure if this is referring to a specific story but there are complaints of a neo-colonialism of African agricultural land where other countries buy up African farms and land in order to supply their own markets with cheap food (using cheap labour too). South Korea, India (!), China, Saudi Arabia have all invested in creating massive African farms. On the other hand, I’ve also heard Britain doing likewise with the Ukraine and a few African countries. South Africa is doing agricultural land deals in other African countries. Australia also has large farms owned by other countries. Not sure if Africans are again getting a raw deal because of their poor leadership (i.e. read corruption) in comparison with other countries which allow foreign states or companies to own farms within their borders. I have also read numerous articles about how Chinese agricultural engineers are assisting African countries with better farming techniques. I guess one then has to ask at what price are they getting this “help”?

Sure everyone’s at it. That doesn’t make it right. Most countries don’t control their corporation’s activities abroad, so the benefit (if any) depends on the corporate culture and their benevolence. Of course, this benevolence comes after massive profits. it’s so wrong! I’ll bet there are very few laws controling how much pesticide run-off gets into that river. Every colonial ruler thinks they are helping the people. In the 19th century, European powers though they were helping by giving people a chance to “westernize”– that is get a job in a factory or farm and work for money, no more “tribal lands.” And why can’t all you tribes in this half million square kilometers get along and be a country like we have in Europe? (Sarcasm alert!)

mwthurlow said ”Sure everyone’s at it. That doesn’t make it right.“ Of course not and I certainly hope no-one takes that message from my comment! The cartoon, however, just “hints” at Asian & Arabic countries involved whereas I say all countries are, including other African states. I will say though, that there does appear to be a very concerted effort on China’s part to secure African natural resources of all sorts including food. I’ve also read up some interesting articles on why India is buying up African land when they have large tracts of rich agricultural land of their own. Rather telling is why they can and your post mentions part of this. As CF above says, Africa is always screwed by everyone else. While there are a few successes on the continent, overall the continent is not “allowed” to develop.

^ You’re making no sense whatsoever; or perhaps I’m the one at fault for not understanding what you have written. Care to explain?
