I second that. It is beyond tasteless.

It remains to be seen whether Snowden did more good or more harm to his country by revealing its secrets. I am perfectly prepared to believe that, in the long run, the nation will be better off for his revelations.

On the other hand, there is no doubt that he broke the laws of his country. I would have had a lot more respect for him if he had made his revelations and then turned himself in, like any of the thousands who have committed acts of civil disobedience in good causes and then accepted the legal consequences. (Which I doubt would have been too terrible, the public spotlight being so upon him.) Just as one has more respect for those who refused to serve in what they regarded as an “unjust war” and, say, went to jail for it, than for those who, refusing to serve, fled to Canada, or used some fraud to avoid the draft.

An old Marine I used to know told me that he had no respect for Oliver North not because of his role in the Iran-Contra affair, but because in the end he ratted out President Reagan rather that keeping his mouth shut and taking all the blame himself.

So, as I said, it may be a good thing for the country that Snowden did what he did, but that does not necessarily make him an admirable person.

Knowing this administration, it would be a couple of leaded sleeping through the forehead.

Today, many break the laws of this country, are admired for it, and go on speaking tours, when they should be shot, as traitors.

“Paul Revere should have been jailed too…”

I’m sure you meant Benedict Arnold.
