The Right’s compulsion to protect their unregulated access to weapons also insists that the Left is politicizing a “tragedy” because the longer we wait, the weaker the political will to do anything at all. When is the time to do something? Anything? You tell us.

This is not a “tragedy”. It is an atrocity. Use of the word “tragedy” implies an act of god, or nature. This is the act of a man, within a society that tolerates repeated acts of murder in the name of protecting a so-called right.

    “Banning guns doesn’t work.”

Not sure that’s true, but certainly it can’t work if the ban is not uniform. It’s pretty easy to get alcohol into a dry county, for example. But, I’ll accept this premise for the sake of “getting along”.

    “Figure something else out.”

You could do the same. Whether you call it a tragedy, or something with lots of words, is it just a price we have to pay for a free society? Or is it a problem that might be solvable if we would only stop fighting about it and assuming what the “other side” thinks (often incorrectly)?

And about 175,000 have died in auto accidents in that time. Essentially, the few instances of mass shootings are grossly over-rated and an extreme rarity.
Also, during the last 5 years all of these mass shootings have been done by persons who are mentally disturbed. I’m not hearing calls for increased institutionalization of the mentally ill and potentially dangerous.

Stop blaming the gun start blaming the person wielding it.

I think we need to segregate this society as soon as possible… we need to send all the anti-gun people somewhere where they can indulge their naive “the world is too dangerous for traditional american freedoms” . I think they will feel safer elsewhere.

So…just thinking outside the box here…LIBS are responsible for more gun deaths than GEORGE W. BUSH! More people have died in Chicago alone where the Libs have complete control than in any other city in the U.S. Why and wherefore, Libs? Can you explain why your strict gun regulation leads to MORE not LESS gun deaths?

He used a shotgun to shoot a TRAINED ARMED GUARD, and take his weapon, to do further damage. Auth is more likely commenting on the fact that CONGRESS has ignored Obama’s call to write, and pass, legislation to reduce the toll, which he’d sign, and it would NOT mean “confiscation” of any of the paranoids weapons. Hmm, the shooter was paranoid too, think about it.

No…he’s likely bemoaning the fact that the world is often a cold, lonely place and the liberal thinks there should be a government (tax-payer-funded) program to “fix” that.

Too bad no AR 15 was involved this time. The shooter had a pistol and a shotgun.

Reverse the old court rulings that closed mental hospitals and put the nutcases back inside on medication with proper medical supervision.

This stuff (crazy people using guns) could be prevented if the nutters’ rights didn’t outweigh the rights of normal citizens.

Now, they have nowhere to go, and they can refuse to take their meds.

Of course it’s partly society’s fault. Anything this complex is going to have more than one cause – societal norms and attitudes included. As are individual responsibilities.
Just one example of how attitudes are shaped. I’ve heard a number of interviews lately with people who have served in the military. Without fail there is the obligatory – “Thanks for service to your country.” Sometimes accompanied by -“and thanks for keeping us free.” Sometimes also the effuse “you are an American hero.” If I hear that one more time, I think I’m going to throw up. What a load of bull. Thanks for invading innocent countries, thanks for killing innocent people, and thanks for wrecking their economies and America’s. Young people are being taught to be killers and then we are surprised when a loose cannon kills back home. Back in WW2 one of the problems the military faced was that soldiers when faced with the enemy were unable to pull the trigger. They had to be taught how to kill through the use of war games. Perhaps they have been taught too well.
Okay, one more societal responsibility. When are those lily-livered cowards in congress going to put the people they serve ahead of re-election and implement something as simple as back-ground checks, or limiting clip capacity? The killers at Tucson, Aurora, Sandy Hook, and D.C. all had identifiable mental issues that should have prevented their access to guns. And why were two legislators in Colorado recalled because they favoured common-sense regulations? Damn right society is part of the problem.

This latest at the Navy yard wasn’t done by a gun since Washington DC has some of the strictest gun laws in the world, there couldn’t have been a gun involved… What? You mean the bad guy didn’t obey the law? That’s not fair!

The mass shootings are just the tip of the problem. They get our attention The daily situation dwarfs this.
