Jules Feiffer has described Tony Auth best, "His perspective is that of a bemused and often angry comic historian. Irony, never a favorite form with Americans, is his meat and potatoes. He is not smug, and though he can be mean, he is never mean-spirited. Auth is a moralist and an optimist. He insists, even in this day and age, that hope is more than the name of a right-wing comedian or the shtick of a reactionary president."

Obama has cut Medicare costs quite substantially already (remember Romney claiming he was taking $700 billion out of Medicare? He did, just not from senior’s benefits.) But as Paul Krugman has noted, saving money in government doesn’t seem to count unless you actually hurt the old or poor. If we aren’t actively hurting the old and the poor, how can we possibly expect the rich to be willing to pay a little more? Now the Republicnas have a plan that will not only hurt the old and the poor, it damages the entire nation! That’s a serious plan, now!

@Ms. Ima
The GOP lost and people like you will prevent their winning again. Not that that’s a bad thing.

Saw some good news today (I get my news at work from the international ticker so its not influenced by American Politics)
Global external news | Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (December 10)
US economy picking up
Chemicals, machines and computers are increasingly being produced in the US again – partly due to the fact that energy is very cheap there. More than half a million industrial jobs have been created after the worst of the recession…. I know the Foxettes will claim its false but why would Germans cook American books?

This cartoon, along with Matt Wuerker’s Dec. 10 toon, justifies the grotesque and vulgar attacks on Democrats made by conservative cartoonists. They are free speech, they are popular with their base, but they are vulgar, divisive, and fail to elevate, or add to, the ongoing debates. The more you insult a party, Dem or Rep, the more you encourage them to dig in their heels. In an effort to save face and pride, the most partisan of these ‘tribes’ will, and have in the past, vote against issues with which they agree, and would help the nation, but would add to making them “look bad.”
Respectfully,
& Happy Holidayze,

Wow… This is the lamest Auth toon in years… I stopped reading Ted Rall because this was about all he could generate. Hope Auth gets over his hangover soon…

@Respectful Troll
Respectfully disagree.
.
The reason that Jon Stewart is the most popular and respected newsman in the US is because he is irreverant, funny and honest at the same time. It’s the same holy grail that cartoonists seek.
.
The humorless shouldn’t be looking at political cartoons. They shouldn’t even be here.
.
PS: I thought the Wuerker comic was great.
