Jules Feiffer has described Tony Auth best, "His perspective is that of a bemused and often angry comic historian. Irony, never a favorite form with Americans, is his meat and potatoes. He is not smug, and though he can be mean, he is never mean-spirited. Auth is a moralist and an optimist. He insists, even in this day and age, that hope is more than the name of a right-wing comedian or the shtick of a reactionary president."

To both our soldiers and Tony Auth, whose work we haven’t seen in a long time.
On Memorial Day, I remember those who didn’t make it home. My mom’s first fiancé, Sgt. Charles Avery Rublee, was declared MIA in Korea on 28 DEC 1950.
On the other hand, Veterans Day is for all veterans, those who made it home and those who didn’t.

it would be nice if the troops really could join the BBQ. Alas, they are stuck in this hellhole, this armpit of a country. And STILL more than 50% of Americans couldn’t find Afghanistan on a map…

Well, unlike the Paul Ryan budget, at least Obama sees an end to our involvement in Afghanistan.

I think it helps the Troops to know that life goes on here at home. That’s why it’s so important to honor them and their sacrifice.

I am afraid this is way to true.

Well the troops are honored twice a year and other times when it is convenient. Must keep them pumped up and believing in the mission to maintain recruitment. Just don’t ask to contribute by paying for the mission in higher taxes.

We “honor” the troops twice a year, but less than 1/10 of 1% of the military budget goes to them. If we really honored them, we’d pay them well, give them good equipment to keep them safe, give them the social services they need when/if they get home to help them overcome their wounds (both physical and psychological), and send them into combat only when the people they’ve sworn to serve are truly endangered, not when the multinational corporations’ profits are.

Ashburn Stadium: I include my 157 friends on “the Wall”, and several more recent friends, including one VERY CLOSE friend now interred at Arlington cemetery, KIA, Iraq, 2007.

Veterans’ benefits belong within the military budget.

There’s lots of difference between combat and home. Most familes sacrifice little while a few sacrifice all.

An even better message is to confine wars to those we can’t avoid, and keep our National Guard here, at home!

Whhaaaat. Where did that come from.
