I don’t believe in “if” anymore
“If” is for children building daydreams.

Not far off from what I read, Olfart.
A write suggested that when you use the word but, you make all the words said prior meaningless.
    “He’s a nice guy, but…” (he’s not a nice guy)
    “It’s a good idea, but…” (bad idea)
Over the past two weeks, I’ve heard some Republicans who have supported some very conservative positions called RINOs and find themselves challenged from people who are even further to the right.
If Independents, moderates, and Democrats actually go to the polls to vote, this wave of ultra conservatism will enable an even more empowered ultra liberal gov’t which, history has shown, is also damaging to gov’t and unity.
It is truly time for moderates on both sides to come together. Compassionate conservatives and fiscally responsible liberals are urgent for the long term success of our nation.

not sure we have a few centuries left. more like a decade or two before the Chinese surpass us. In America we value material things over education, right now the Chinese value education over material things. That will change when they surpass us, but with over 1 billion people they will be hard to overtakes again.

As to our government it is sad when compromise becomes a bad word. The purpose of the 2 party system is supposed to be government by compromise. Damn I forgot the Tea Baggers hate government

Correction: The food stamp program has never, ever been cut. Thy’ve just tried to slow down the spending. More people on food stamps now than in the history of the program. Look it up.

    Are you KIDDING me?!!
Boehner was shocked, just shocked to learn that the government shutdown would not accomplish anything.
I wish a reported had asked what it was that Boehner thought would have been accomplished.

The level of extremity to which liberals might reach would be based on the ratio of liberal to conservative, Night Gaunt.
I would like to think that a White House, Senate, and HoR that was all Democrat would equal a moderate and thoughtful body. History has not born such hopes out as reasonable. We need a multiparty system in order for the minority as well as the majority of our neighbors to have their needs met where possible and reasonable.
It is a shame we can’t focus more on what MUST be done instead of the emotionally charged social issues with which both parties divide us.
I agree with you in theory, NG. But history shows that absolute power corrupts, absolutely.

And the corporatists have ultimate power, RT. And, no matter who seems to run the government, you will have to pry that power from their cold dead hands. Them, and their republican stooges present here. Still spouting the lies they are fed.

I have no argument with anything you say, NG. The right wing conservatives and the “Reagan Democrats” have been in charge for awhile. I tend to be a cynical optimist and an idealistic pessimist and I have the Myers-Briggs test to prove it.
If either party has a majority, I fear our nation being pulled so far to one extreme that those of us born in the 50s and 60s won’t recognize it, and neither will the rest of the nations on earth.
I have read enough of Jefferson and Adams and other founders to know that we are not the enlightened people they hoped we would be by now. Instead, like Rome in its final days, we represent the worst of their fears. plutocracy being just one of them.
From the political tribalism against which Washington warned, to the career politicians against which many founders warned, to the powerful influence of money in our political process against which Adams and Madison warned, we are descending into an artificial democracy where politicians pick their voters instead of voters picking their politicians. Those characteristics we deem to be the highest ideals of man… honor, honesty, compassion, et al, are impediments to the way politicians get themselves elected and how they rule once they have ensconced themselves.
I actually don’t think you need to be reminded, NG. You seem well educated on our gov’t and our history. It is, however, nice to have a firm soundboard off of which ideas and further debate can be offered to those many people who read the comments but never comment themselves. You and I will never change the minds of Ima DF or Harley, but there are people out there trying to understand and make decisions and from some of the emails I have received, they like people who can talk rationally and with civility.
Thank you for being one of those.
This is my last day of posting for the year, and if I recall, you are religiously ambivalent, so I will wish you good times with those you love and a safe and splendid New Year’s Eve.
    Take care, neighbor.
