    23,000 pounds on a ship of 50,000 tons or so would hardly be noticeable. Besides, it would be more than offset by the coal burned during the voyage.

    Actually, there should be a net loss of weight, since the weight gained by the passengers is offset by the weight of the food they ate and the weight of the “waste matter” that was disposed of through the toilets.
