Some of our younger respondants won’t get this—thank God!

Watch the movie “Airport” (1970). Back then it was usual to announce through the PA-system “Mr. Miller, please pick up the [color] courtesy phone” in airports, malls etc. because there were no mobile phones. “White” here is a joke on race and nobody can explain jokes…

    SNERK”!

So does that mean that “The Red Courtesy Phone” is only for Native Americans??
“Paging Captain Oveur! Paging Captain Oveur! Please Pick up the White Courtesy Phone!”
“No, I said the WHITE Courtesy Phone…”

You’re talking about “Airplane”, right? I never saw the original English version, just the German translation. In that the two African Americans talking so animatedly to each other in the plane are speaking thick Bavarian accents! That’s probably even more hilarious than the original…

When did they designate a phone exclusive to albinos?

I have never heard of this,
but I assume it is a white phone so it’s easy to see.
Better if they had used lime green or bright orange.
I don’t know where these phones are used..

If I remember right there was also a technological advantage. See, you didn’t have to do anything after picking up, you were connected to the switchboard automatically and then “taken off the loop”. So Mr. Smith could be asked to pick up “the nearest” (they often were arranged in clusters throughout the building) red CP, Mr. Miller the nearest yellow CP, Ms. Barlow the nearest white CP and by then the red “open loop” would be free again (Mr. Smith would have picked up and been separated from the loop) and the cycle would restart. This system was basically for everybody in the area (airport, mall), passengers, employees, contractors and so on. Pretty clever, given the limitations of technology back then…

I hear that a lot from Mac users.
