There is a device you can buy called a ‘pill gun’. It shoots the pill far enough down the throat that you pet can’t spit it out, but HAS to swallow it. The real problem is trying to get their mouth open enough to use it. After using it once, they fight like crazy if you pull it out to use it again.
There’s a pharmacy in my area that serves both people and pets, and they can put any animal prescription in liquid form and give you a pick of flavors. I don’t know if such a thing is widely available, but you might want to call around to pet pharmacies in your area and see if they offer liquid prescriptions. (If you have no luck, you can console yourself by going to a local pub and getting a human liquid prescription.)

We used to put pills for the dog into a spoonful of peanut butter. It worked every time. :-)
