I still go to the library… more to take out dvd’s than books.
Though I swear some people must be using the discs as coasters or frisbees.

People don’t care about items that don’t belong to them, and they don’t have to worry about replacing them when damaged. If the library started to examine each DVD when returned and required the borrower to pay for damaged DVD’s you wouldn’t have that problem.

We do check for external damage, but if it isn’t broken or severely scratched, the best we can do is clean them. We can’t be responsible for how people, or DVD machines, treat the disks. And people will say they didn’t do any damage, even when returning a DVD in two pieces (which I’ve experienced). Besides, I’ve heard libraries are going away since the late 70s. People still check out books, need computer access, need assistance for their lives, need a place to go.

I haven’t been to a library since my University days….and that was the campus library.

That’ll never happen: it’ll dry up the one reason (besides use of the PCs to do job searches) that still brings people to the library.

The library is the place that you go to when you need quiet and calm.

Our small town library – a school/community combo is the best ever. Wifi, nooks for 2 weeks, discussion groups, computers, quiet chairs, and (best of all) no late fees!

Hard paper libraries still need to exist. But the big market bookstores can’t supplant them.
