What happens when a man's love for giant squid crosses the line from concern to obsession? (Man: It's so pretty...) That's the question in "squid man" the riveting documentary by werner herzog. (Man 2: Humans, pigs, millipedes- they disgust me. Only the giant squid is pure.) Jason Quimby was a 27-year-old insurance broker who spent his vacations living among the 25-foot-long animals 3,000 feet under the sea. Everything went well until a hungry architeuthis enveloped quimby and his girlfriend in its tentacles, chopped them up in its sharp beak and ate them. "Squid man," while clearly disapproving of quimby's actions, admires his idealism and love of nature. (Man 3: Anyone who treats squid like pets is asking for it.) (Woman: He wanted to swim with squid. Is that so wrong?) In the end, we must all ask ourselves: ARe we as brave- or delicious- as the squid man? (Man 2: Hold still- it's flashing)
