    “It is the president’s view that facility ought to be closed,” insisted Press Secretary Jay Carney, accusing Congress of raising “obstacles” to the closure that kept President Obama from fulfilling his campaign promise.

    The Senate blocked the President from using any funds for closing the detention camp, tying Obama’s hands (the President can only spend money which Congress agrees to appropriate).

    Gitmo is the poster child for what’s wrong with America. The world doesn’t understand, and neither do I. How can the “land of the free” continue to keep prisoners for years without trial, without the right to confront an accuser, without the right to a speedy trial, without due process? It is embarrassing. Try these people, imprison the guilty, free the innocent, and close this hateful chapter in our history.

    That is the American way. No charges, no trial, if you are found not guilty, you don’t go free.

    It’s a catch-22. We imprisoned some of these people without just cause and evidence. If we actually tried them in court those cases would be thrown out and the now “radicalized” prisoners will truly be jihadists against America. Either we damn them to a modern day oubliette or roll the dice and release them. Hoping they won’t feel the need to drop a dirty nuke or biological weapon on us. Will we be brave enough to do the right thing?

    I’m with you 100% on this one. Another horrible example of how the Patriot Act can go to extremes and compromise the civil rights allowed under our system.

    Hey Stu, I’ll vote for releasing all those nice guys if you promise to operate the half-way house for them.

    As a German I have to say: at least you are not shy about admitting Concentrations Camps. Imagine what would have happened if we had done the same thing back then…

    A day after the Boston Maratho attack is not the time to try to get syjmpathy for those accused of terrorist activities

    @Ms. Ima

    Most of the prisoners weren’t on battle fields. They were walking down city streets, abducted by those who took bounty from the USA. The USA didn’t care who they were or what they did nor not have done. Now they just kill people with drones. Murder Inc. USA

    Why is Gitmo still open?? By now the authorities should have found out what other countries have wants and warrents out for the inmates. Ship them to those countries.

    The same thing happened in WW II – these are prisoners of war.
