    yeah, it’s a mess when even a HS grad cannot spell simple words. The only bright part of this mess is that the superintendent, Beverly Hall, who received thousands in bonuses will be spending most of this on legal fees.

    Not just in Atlanta but where ever it is used it leads to corruption.

    I was in a fast food place in Atlanta a couple of years ago. The computers were down, so the cashiers had to figure out the change by themselves. The girl behind the counter COULD NOT figure out the change due on a $4.73 order from a $5 bill. When I told her it was $.27, she fumbled around and scraped up a bunch of nickles and pennies. When I asked her why she didn’t give me a quarter and pennies, she said, and I Quote; “You said it was 27 cents change.”
    I asked her exactly how much a quarter, and 2 pennies added up to, and she actually had to think about it for a couple of seconds before saying; “Oh yeah, I guess that IS the same thing!”
    She was a recent High School Graduate, by the way!

    YOU GET WHAT YOU MEASURE.
    Sheesh. And NCLB stinks as a measure.

    Texas was used as an example of NCLB. High school graduates were what percentage of the starting classes?

    NCLB has done more damage to American education than any union, or other “issue” in the last three decades, other than tax breaks that robbed from education in many areas.

    And, no, money is NOT the only issue, but programs that get parents involved, like Head Start, have done good things, but of course, “the right” doesn’t like them.

    They saw that the new way of doing things set education back 50 years or more.

    Consider Kids like that , Job Security.
    I work in a factory, and the shock on these kids face when you tell them “Be Here at 6 in the A.M.” is priceless. Most of them don’t even make it through the first month.

    @onguard

    Yeah sure. Send your kid to private schools that are not held to public school standards on tax payer dollars. That’ll work really well.

    Dear Lord! I knew it was bad, but I didn’t know it was this bad. But even here in Germany people lose simple math skills. I can add up my tally at the counter faster than the guy can put the stuff over the scanner, so he is always surprised to be given exact change seconds after the last item is through. Well, I’m old and he is young, so there…
