Ms. Wingit: HI, Holly! Did you have a nice vacation?
Holly: I had to study MATH all summer.
Ms. Wingit: Good for YOU! That will make this year SO much easier!
Ms. Wingit: Let me guess, dear...you don't GIVE A RIP.
Holly: Good guess.
Too many middle and high school students “don’t give a rip.” As they say, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink.” You can’t make someone learn who is determined they don’t want to.
Two years ago my nephew’s attitude was a perfect match for Holly’s and his grades showed it. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts to fix his wagon during that school year, the intervention team figured out how to reach him. Whatever it is they did, he likes school again and is doing his homework. When I thanked the principal he smiled and said, “He’s a good kid, he was just lazy.” I’m so glad they found a way to help him want to learn again.
