Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Ouch. Harsh medicine, but possibly needed. Doesn’t matter if you do remember him as perfect, Val; he’s gone, and Phil is here now, and Phil doesn’t have to measure up to anyone. Phil is Phil, and is worth keeping. He won’t replace Tom, but he will make a good addition to the family.

Joan’s complete sentence: “Those of us in the present will go on without you as we advance forward towards the future.”

Awww…I’m sure that’s hard, but yes Val it’s okay. Scene two: Val at the graveyard saying her final goodbye..

@arsmall, They wouldn’t lift that right from the Lethal Weapon series, would they?

She doesn’t have to say goodbye to Tom or think that he’s less than what she remembers. Val just needs to open her heart a little more and let Phil in too.

The heart is a strong little muscle, it’s large enough to love a lot of people and things. Memories are just what they are memories, it’s not healthy to live in them.

Patience… Sometimes the tender moments take over. And sometimes they turn into funny moments. I know that the wait will be worth the suspense.

I don’t see Val saying good bye to Tom; but rather asking if it’s okay.
As Joan once told Holly (when Holly was all upset about Val being with Phil) “Your mom has enough room in her heart for your dad, you girls and Phil.” To which Holly stated, that is a huge heart!

Wonderful summations from both lighten up and Violet Bay – Val’s fear is that if she lets Phil into her heart, she’ll lose what’s left of Tom. If she takes the risk, she will learn that that’s not so. I think she’s ready to go for it.

Yeah, what’s the real issue here? It really isn’t Tom.

T_Lexi, you are so right! There’s plenty of room in our hearts.

This is a really good emotional story. Comics aren’t always funny nor should they be. A very good story so far. Just remember that the past is dead and we still are alive.
