Jan Eliot's funny and irreverent Stone Soup follows the saga of an extended, blended family, starring two working-mom sisters living just across the fence from each other. Val and Joan share life with their opinionated mother, a middle-school diva and 10-year-old tomboy, a reclusive teenage boy, a wild preschooler and his new baby sister...and of course Wally, the ultimate nice guy who steps into his stepdad shoes with grace amid the chaos. Working-parent hassles, pre-school tantrums, middle-school angst, love and the single mom... it's all here in Stone Soup.

Phil or Val needs to start a conversation with

" I think the girls need a father figure . . . . . "

It’s not a father necessarily, it’s just another figure. There are plenty of dads who hate reading books and probably know nothing about Sherlock Holmes. She just needs as many caring, loving, adults that can fit into her life whether it’s a female figure or a male.

One of Doyle’s weakest efforts. At least it was better than the Speckled Band with the snake that could drink milk and answer to the sound of a whistle.

He reads, he’s great with Alix…

@Fiendly Neighbourhood Terrorist
I have to strongly disagree. The Speckled Band is by far one of ACD’s best efforts and there are many that agree. While ACD did make what appears to be silly mistakes with the snake, I really don’t think that it takes away from the enjoyment of the story at all. It still is a brilliantly crafted and suspenseful adventure. All Sherlock Holmes stories expect the reader to suspend disbelieve in one way or another to make them work, the SB isn’t any different. Holmes is rather like the more modern Superheroes in that regard. After all, we can enjoy the adventures of Superman, Spiderman, Thor et al. despite the silly science behind their powers.

Nicole, i disagree 100% Children need role models, a father and a mother are best, but all kids need at least 1 member of each sex to trust and try to understand. Uncles, grandfathers can fill this role, usually. A single mom who has a series of boyfriends is doing her children wrong.

I agree with Grandma!

You are correct, but I don’t think Nicole meant “serial” role models, just lots of people a child knows he or she can trust. That’s why churches, synagogues, etc are great places to raise kids. Even an after school program such as PALS is a good place to find role models.

Perhaps Heart could do with a visit to Alix’s house.
And maybe the two of them would enjoy reading “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”

As to starting the topic of “I think the girls need a father figure” probably needs to be gradma, not Phil, or Val will think he’s trying to “take over”. If gradma talks to Val in private, Val may go along with it.
