I grew up in So. Cal. back in the 50s & 60s. One of our favorite summer entertainments was watching the tourists from the midwest fry themselves on the first day of their week-long vacation and spend the rest of their time huddled under that umbrella. We got our tans slowly in the spring, so usually no sunburns, or at least not bad ones.
