Mr. Gates may be right on some points. However, he is under the mistaken impression that these endless, pointless “wars” can be won. He feels that we can turn haters into allies by shooting, imprisoning, and torturing them. Under the circumstances, how much should we be willing to trust him and his assessments?

Then again…if he had quit his post, he would have left the military at the hands of Obama’s next appointee. Whoever that was.

Does the book state why he accepted the post?

Gates did say that Obama made all the right decisions in Iraq and Afghanistan. That part of the book is being left out of a lot of the commentary.

I’m looking forward to reading Mr. Gates’s book. It is my understanding that he is even more harsh against the Congress than he is regarding the current and past President. I do hope it keeps Mr. Biden from running. As much as I like “Joe” personally, I believe him too old and too politically ‘damaged’ to be POTUS. Same for Ms. Clinton. The Dems need to dive deeper to find a truly suitable candidate rather than skimming the surface and allowing the media to do it for them.

You know as well as I do, that if she wants it, and her health holds out, not only will Hillery be the Democratic nominee, right now I would say that it is a 60/40 chance she is going to be the next president. I wonder what they will call Bill Clinton? “First Man” or “First ex President”?

The Republicans are far too broken up by the tea party types to even find a viable candidate, so the general election would be hers to lose, and she is far too intelligent to do that!!

You know, I actually felt somewhat sorry for Mitt Romney. There was no possible way for him to have beaten president Obama in 2012. In order to win the Republican nomination with the ultra conservatives, he had to be a flaming conservative himself (whihc he managed to do quite nicely), but in order to win the general election he had to then turn around and become the middle political moderate that those moderates and independents would vote for in order to become president. He also did this, and then the conservatives turned on him, as a “flip flopper”. Man, the guy could NOT win!!

Also, like RT, interested in seeing the book, and don’ think Joe or Hillary should run, but it’s long past time to recognize the WAR department, and Secretary of WAR, and lose the idiot title “Defense”. Gates was better than Rumsfeld, but still too much for giving the Pentagon too much control, especially the contractors and corporations who REALLY run the Pentagon.
