Yes those CFB’s have mercury in them and that is unfortunate. However the biggest source of mercury in our environment is burning coal. The more electricity we use, the more mercury is put into our atmosphere and ultimately into our water. We know that even trace amounts of mercury are neurotoxins. The CFBs are a better choice, not perfect, but better.

Thank goodness for our nanny-state government! What with those incandescent bulbs causing all that “Global Warming”…

    High Monday? -2 F….

My house has most of the incandescent bulbs replaced by CFLs before I bought it. I’ve yet to break one. The local stores are finally starting to carry LED bulbs with 900+ lumens to replace the 60 watt incandescent. I will be giving them a try.

One more choice that we don’t have. One day we will not have to think at all. Our wonderful government will make all decisions for us.

I recommend the LED bulbs over the CF’s. Unless you can find “daylight” CF’s (more expensive and rare comparatively) the LED’s are a better buy.
Also, DO NOT use either with a dimmer switch or other similar device! They will have a very short life and are potentially dangerous if you do that.
As for incandescent bulbs, I think the market should determine that not the government. It should be your choice as to what you use.

God knows you’re so right. Just look at what happened when the government efforts cured polio ! Or helped us get clean water! Or air we can mostly breath! Or electricity! Man, we are so better off without any society at all. Look at how good Somalia is doing!

Oh, and pointing out it’s cold during winter and saying there is no “Global Warming” shows ignorance on a scale beyond grade school dropout.

Been in our “new” house for a year, the previous owner had installed the new bulbs, so far, none have burned out or broken, but they do NOT work on three-ways or dimmers.

As to incandescents, they can be more efficient, and seem to recall reading somewhere that Edison’s original bulb with heavier filament is still burning. If you could get absolute vacuum, they’d apparently all last until you get clumsy and break them.

LEDs work on dimmers. And use even less power than CFTs.

Yes, LED’s will work on a dimmer but it tends to shorten their life substantially.

LEDs are also “cold”. My daughter burnt herself on her desk-lamp’s incandescent. We switched after that.

It’s comical watching all the liberals crawling out from under their rocks and defending their right to control the lives of everyone else, yet get all huffy when nobody appreciates them for this great sacrifice.
