Vanderbeam’s lost love—he’s hoping that one of the alternate realities has her still around.

    Nutshell rendition?
The “starslip” process involves going back and forth between different timelines + realities.
In the “original” reality, he was in a relationship with a woman named Jovia, who was the daughter of the king of a major planet. When someone tried to kill the king, he saved Jovia from becoming collateral.
Thing is, they accidentally hopped into a reality in which he did not succeed in saving her, and so she was killed in the attack.

Vanderbeam also went so far as to ask the Ships Computer if it were theoretically possible to plot a Starslip back to the previous Reality in which he saved Jovia . It IS, but the calculations to pinpoint that exact timeline will take 400,000 years. which explains why the mainframe crashes every time someone plays “Spider Solitaire”…. :-)
