    Better than seven and a half billion years.
    (All that to get the number 42)
    Did Douglas Adam ever explain why he came up with that number?

    @Bruno Zeigerts

    I remember he said he worked hard to figure out a number that had no real significance to anything. Totally random sounding. If it was a prime number, or a multiple of 3 or 5 or something, people might try to find meaning in that. 42 seems weirdly arbitrary.

    “Imagine for a moment you could step in on a past life. What would you like to find yourself doing there? What would charm you, make you proud? Ask yourself that, and the question of what to do in this life becomes so simple it’s terrifying. To do the thing that charms you, that makes you say ‘Yes, that’s the real me’. Do that, and you’re alive.”
