Let’s see. There’s this singing group called the “Ferryboat Trio.” One of the members of the group is a certain Mr. Tootlebaum. He used to board at the Gohagen’s house when he was in town. But the Gohagens bought a sheet and an egg. Then Mr. Tootlebaum quit coming to visit the Gohagens. Perhaps someone can explain to me the humor in this.

..i think he’s complaining that the did it up right at his house for Mr Tootlebaum to stay over, but then he never did…

Yes, I agree. to davidf, the humor would come in Somerset thinking of the attraction of the accommodations. When groceries were paid for in pennies, a sheet and an egg would be a big deal. Perhaps not as elegant as Mr. Tootlebaum of the Ferryboat Trio is accustomed to, however.

C’mon! You go to the expense of buying a sheet for the guy to sleep on and an egg for his breakfast, and then he doesn’t stay! What’s not to get?
