it’s time to pay the athletes and stop the bs about sports building character.

What make you think they DON’T Pay the athletes?
Puff courses like “Basket Weaving 101”, “Introduction to Basic Snorkeling”, and so forth, to be sure they have at least a 3.5 G.P.A., “Discounted” leases from the local Porsche or Mercedes Dealer, and more!
Maybe they don’t get a “salary”, but they sure DO get “Paid!”

Penn State’s Beaver Stadium seats 107,282.
It should be renamed Joseph V. Paterno Memorial Stadium.

ALLEN, Texas — Portions of a $60 million Texas high school football stadium that opened just two years ago might have to be demolished and rebuilt after structural flaws were found.

A report by Plano-based Nelson Forensics says cracks found at Eagle Stadium in the Dallas suburb of Allen might be caused by substandard concrete work and improper structural design of reinforcing steel.

I wish they would do that. Separate the academics from the sports.

    @Rad-ish

No school in Europe or Asia would ever waste such money on a sports arena for their high school. NONE.

Agreed. Atheletes are paid enough. If they were to get salaries, you would open a can of worms that would terribly impact any of the football schools that are not in the top 20 and atheletes in all the non revenue generating sports at colleges everywhere.

There are reasons why we do so poorly. It goes to how we live. What is important to most of us. Sports is one, science is not one.

Don’t forget the free tuition, room and board, and education
    .
Which can be yanked away by the school, at any time, for any reason. The school demands a lot of an athlete’s time, for off-season conditioning, training, and practices – not counting the actual competitive events.
    .
The players want to be assured that they won’t be tossed away like trash, that their scholarships will be guaranteed, if they are injured. The athletes want to have insurance that will cover them in the event of injuries that might incapacitate them for life. And they want to have more time available to study.
    .
Finally, contrary to what the knee-jerk anti-unionists spit out, student athletes are not knuckle-dragging Neanderthals taking puffball courses. What an asinine, biased, closed-minded, mean-spirited thing to say.
    .
You conservatives don’t own mean-spiritedness exclusively, but time and again you underscore your majority with the nasty things you say and do.
