Be afraid. Be very afraid. We have met the enemy and he is us.

The only problem here is that France is already a direct part of the EU, and we in the US are not.

Didn’t the Guardian retract that story about the NSA tapping Eurozone communications?
Or am I thinking of something else?

I’m not at all familiar with the French Constitution. But the U.S. Constitution has a provision against “unreasonable search and seizure” aimed at citizens.
    .
This ’toon addresses neither of those; it is aimed at allies spying on allies – a questionable activity to say the least.

Now, we would probably consider both Germany and Japan to generally be allies to the US. But in the early 1940’s, they were the axis (heck, as was even Italy, now like Germany another member of the EU) powers or the “enemy”! So, in spying today’s ally may just be tomorrows enemy, and the spying is generally to attempt to find out the change point from one to the other. And besides, just what is to prevent those very countries from also spying on the US also? So why not just relax as private citizens and enjoy the ride?

Actually Dave, Barry took the Bush policy and expanded the scope ten-fold.
I know this is hard to swallow, but it’s the truth, despite what your bumper sticker says.

How is this news? Go and read the EU commision document A5-0264 from 2002 about how many millions of euroes it has cost european companies that the american government ran industrial espionage on its allies on behalf of american companies. And stop blaming Obama. It was Clinton who started this.

“And yet, Obama has been called on the carpet for it in Germany, as we speak.”

Correct, Merkel is/was a tad miffed. But that’s Germany. What was revealed was that France (it’s another European country, fyi ) was doing same as your NSA, and worse, to its own citizens. Therefore, until it’s revealed Germany does the same (and it probably does), the hypocrisy lies just with France, for the moment. (whereas, in all probability, the hypocrisy lies with all since they’re all at it)

And thats the crux, every country spies and if we gave it up then the others would have an advantage over the US.

And we never heard a peep from the Jewish Lobby when it was revealed Israel had turned one of our people to spy for them. Nothing but embarrassed silence while they endeavor to paint Israel as a paragon of virtue. And no, our spying did not start under Clinton. U-2 scandal was Eisenhower. Bay of Pigs invasion (CIA) was Eisenhower/Kennedy. Read Legacy of Ashes to find out how we have been mis-served and misled by our “intelligence” organizations.
