The internet existed long before 1994. Arpanet was in existence in the late 60’s, and I remember connecting to it in the early 70’s (I was a pre-teen at the time). Packet technology (the basic communication unit of the Internet) was developed to deal with the possibility of global thermonuclear war in the 60’s. Anyone who was anyone knew this at the time. The so-called-internet is just a pasted application on top of Arpanet, which is still running beneath the Internet as most people know it (which is only a very small segment of the actual web). I used to teach a course on this, but 30 seconds on Google gives all the background (of course, it is just text, no pictures, so you have to know how to read…).
