Watching that strip with a bemused look. What is that thing with American men and barbecue? Is it really that intense?

My 30 year old Weber (charcoal) works just fine, thank you.

I have a small charcoal grille that has collapsible legs, and it works great with deadfall tree limbs, which are free. It travels nicely for camping, too. Steak cooked over maple is awesome! If I want gas, I also have a 2-burner gas grill with an additional side burner in case I want to cook something in a pot.

Why, yes. Yes it IS that intense. It is all about men and fire and feeding the tribe and being men and making manly grunting noises as you do so. It is a much deeper and more complex ritual than can be found in any church.

Gas grills suck. I dumped mine two years ago after it conked out (the venturi tubes were flaming and the spark starter was broken) and got a $25 square model from Home Depot. I can grill 2 racks of rib simultaneously (they have never tasted better) and the white ash males excellent fertilizer.

Only for those without a life who convince themselves that charing meat outdoors is an “art” and some special talent.
