“Don’t stigmatise depression after Germanwings crash “

”Britain’s most senior psychiatrist has warned airline authorities to avoid a kneejerk reaction to the crash of the Germanwings flight, insisting that depression should not lead to a lifetime ban for commercial airline pilots.“

”Wessely added his voice to those of mental health charities who have raised concerns about the media’s reporting of the crash.

He said: “We are all concerned. There are two reasons why: there isn’t a link between depression and aggressive suicide, if that is what this is. There isn’t normally such a link. And second, because of some of the ridiculous things that are said.

“Piers Morgan said that it was a disgrace that a man with acute depression was allowed to fly. Well, they are not allowed to fly. There may have been some fault in the procedures that let this happen, but they are not allowed to fly.”

There is a reason why we are called “land mammals”.
In our family we call people who fly “wingnuts”.

Was it the fault of a politically correct right to privacy of medical records?

When I was an Air Traffic Controller, I had to pass the same physical examination required of commercial pilots. That annual physical was administered by a physician employed by the FAA; no cost to me and no privacy of pertinent results.

Sure doesn’t make me want to fly anywhere.
If you’re entrusted with the lives of hundreds of people everyday, shouldn’t there be regular mental evaluations and regular background checks?
The Secret Service does this and they’re just protecting the bozo in the White House.

If the report is true that the German co-pilot was taking anti-depressants found in his home,he would have been grounded in a flight physical for CIVIL aviation, let alone commercial.

Hmm, mental health in pilots who can take down a plane, versus mental health for politicians who can take down nations, where’s the greatest risk???
