    In 1945, Truman saved millions of Japanese lives by nuking them. MacArthur suggested Truman save millions of North Korean and Chinese lives the same way in ‘52, and Truman fired him: by ’52, the USSR ALSO had nukes, so it wasn’t the no-brainer it had been in ‘45. It was still a no-brainer, but the opposite: you never use nukes against anyone who also has them, or who has an ally who has them (and if you’re not sure if the nation you want to destroy really has an ally that would retaliate for a nuclear attack, always err on the side of caution and DON’T attack).

    So North Korea is the same no-brainer now that it was in ’52. And probably still will be in 2052.

    The old song by The Who is more apropos than ever before:

    [and I get on my knees and pray…] We Don’t Get Fooled Again

    Robinson and Acemoglu in their book “Why Nations Fail” would call North Korea an “extractive oligarchy”. It is probably the most extreme one on the planet. The regime there will fail eventually and Kim Jr. and his cronies will be called to account for the camps all the people they starved to death. My personal hope is that he gets fed to starving dogs.

    @Zuhlamon

    It depends on what you mean by ‘history’. Do they teach what happened and how things were like? Or do they teach what happened and how things were like after they whitewash and scrub out the parts that are icky or that they don’t agree with?
