Ah-h-h-h, THE Saint Nicholas lived and worked and died in what is now Turkey. How’s the ethnic chances he had the skin color of Megyn Kelley or Sarah P? Just asking…

Actually, pretty good. Have you ever traveled in the region or is this one of your prejudices?

I have to agree with ConGov.
I may disagree with what the gentleman said, but it is inherent on those who support the First Amendment to “defend to the death his right to say it.”
People who find what he said offensive have the option of voting with their wallets and channel changers. Moments like this are an opportunity to discuss things, not form mobs.
What I find most amusing is how conservatives are responding to the reaction of those who are offended the exact same way liberals responded when conservatives attacked someone for saying things with which they disagreed.
I’ve never watched the show unless I was visiting a person who was, and I’ve never bought the merchandise, but I find this a learning moment.
No one knows if he’s right about God and gays until we die, and if the Atheists are right, we won’t care after that.
I take the greatest exception with his comments about blacks under Jim Crow. I was in Mississippi during the early 60s and through the summers of the 70s and I speak as a witness that blacks were NOT happier under Jim Crow.
Let the discussion continue, and let NO ONE who speaks with civility be silenced.
Tho. Jefferson said we must give voice to everyone, even those who would destroy our Constitution, if for no other reason but to hear what they are saying.
I’d rather hear out in the open than find out what was said in secret meetings.
Today is my last posting day in GC and next week I go to CA.
I hope you have a Merry Christmas, ConGov., and a safe and Happy New Year.

“Race” is socially defined, and the definition changes over time. Here is some bibliography for those who might be interested:
Jacobson, Matthew Frye. 1998. Whiteness of a Different Color: European Immigrants and the Alchemy of Race. Cambridge: Harvard University Press.
Goldstein, Eric L. 2006.The Price of Whiteness: Jews, Race, and American Identity. Princeton: Princeton University Press.
Roediger, David R. 2005. Working Towards Whiteness: How America’s Immigrants Became White: The Strange Journey from Ellis Island to the Suburbs. New York: Basic Books.
There was a time when Irish immigrants were not considered white. And of course Jews weren’t white for a long time, but now, mostly, they are. What about Hispanics? Some say yes, some say no. And of course there’s the one drop rule.

I’ve heard Obama say that he’s mixed. The addition of the category “mixed” is an interesting development in US thought about race. When I was growing up, there was no such thing. There were a lot of very light “colored people” (as we said where I grew up), but no one ever called them mixed. Many “whites” are also mixed, though they may not know it.

Santa Claus is an imaginary chararcter and therefore can be any color we want to imagine him.

Those skin tones are the results of tribute and raids by the Ottoman Turks throughout the Balkans and all the way to Vienna. The Ottomans arrived after St Nicholas’ times.

Yes, the Greek dude. but…. that is not the person who is the model for Santa Claus.

    Read this please.

But hey, Greeks are white guys right? I mean a truly “white” guy is an aberration, a divergence from normal, an abnormality don’cha see. So all of us Caucasian humans are not really white but varied shades of beige with some crimson blended in.

But yeah, real people – such as the actual St. Nick – have a designated skin tone.

Mythical characters can be anything you want them to be BUT it may be best to stick to what the myth teller has in the story.

Or have you forgotten sitting around the fire late (early) at night with all the red eyes around your home and hearing the tribal lore being intoned once again?

Bruce, some place else I suggested you look up “Zwarte Piet”. I’ve made it easier for you. Since you bring up Sinterklaas, I’ll remind you not to forget his mate, Piet. Don’t forget to black up.

What does that say about the KKK who see mankind divided by race, and see “colored” in every situation?
