Rick and Rack by Ethan Long
What is this strip about? Well, come to think of it, I really don't know. All I know is that I love to draw the characters, put them into different situations and write funny dialogue for them. I created this strip back in 2000 when my Dad passed away, but I never really developed it until this year. Essentially, it is a love letter to him. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania I had a stuffed raccoon as my favorite toy that he gave me (and still do to this day) and a day off from school to celebrate the first day of deer hunting season. The strip just makes me laugh. Whether it makes you laugh is another story, but I guess if I want to be popular cartoonist, I'll have to get used to hearing the opinions of others. Oh well, that's the nature of public art.
I like to think Rick and Rack is a statement about nature vs. humanity. I like to think that animals find us humans interesting despite materialism, alcoholism and all the other negative aspects of our civilization. Our creativity, individualism and curiosity are all part of human nature, too, and both Rack and I find that fascinating. Rick's pessimistic approach to life is part of human nature, too, and I also find it fascinating that humans can have so much to be thankful for, yet can still feel incomplete inside. I know I suffer from that. I guess that's why I write and draw - to feel complete.
Rick and Rack. Yin and Yang. Together they make for fun writing.
