Wellington’s scheme to recover the “Crank Bridge” Spectacles that rightfully belonged to him was finally coming to fruition. Within a few moments, a titanic crescendo of clashing cymbals and rolling drums would provide cover for his agents as they whisked away the eyeglasses from his unsuspecting cousin, seated in the back of the hall.

I’m sure the question that popped into my mind when looking at this cartoon also occurred to many others: Can a Bactrian mate with a Dromedary?

The answer, according to “Tamerlane’s” entry on The Straight Dope web site, is yes. So you can put your mind at ease:

“Bactrian camel have 2 humps and are rugged cold-climate camels while Dromedaries have one hump and are desert dwellers. Bactrian/Dromedary hybrids are called Bukhts, are larger than either parent, have a single hump and are good draft camels. The females can be mated back to a Bactrian to produce three-quarter bred riding camels. These hybrids are found in Kazakhstan.”

The one that sticks with me is the one where Columbo recognizes that the dead person didn’t tie his own shoes, because the shoe-lace knot was on the wrong side. But if the murdered who put shoes on the victim and tied them after finishing him off had been left handed, like me, the knot would have been on the same side as if the victim had tied his shoes himself. So, as a left-hander, I could have gotten away with murder. Of course, I might have made some other mistake . . .

It may not seem difficult to solve this mono-colored Rubik’s cube, but first you have to find it.
