Hong Kongese, that is mostly Cantonese people, are more or less Taoists. It is a polytheist religion, with many gods and spirits, where even foreign gods or godlike creatures like Buddha or Jesus can find their place. Therefore it is adaptable and inherently tolerant since you can always worship one god while admitting that other people beside you worship another. More importantly though, Hong Kongese are pragmatics. Houses and businesses have ancestors shrines where you pray for good luck and honor spirits and your departed elders. There are temples and festivals where people go and pray to hope for good business, happy returns, love or luck. But most importantly, people believe in working hard and doing the right thing. As Taoists, they believe in reincarnation and hell, so if you fail in this life, you can hope for better in the next. As a city, all religions are represented and free, but no religion can impose its views. There is a big mosque in Hong Kong for instance, and muslims are welcome to worship and hold their beliefs. But if they try to bring their muslim laws or customs into public life, they would be very severely punished. In a word, anyone is allowed to have a religion, but they should keep it to themselves, and it works.

Having an email joke list makes you a bad person, however.

It wasn’t indeed. Which shows that no matter who is in power in the USA, they keep doing the most stupid and dangerous things that will cause more chaos pain death and war in the future. It’s hopeless.

    Very good. Right on point.

In the case of Alex it is not self-publishing. You don’t have lunch with your editor when you are self publishing. Betty is turning bitter, because she has always been hiding behind sarcasm to avoid facing whether she can be published or not. She didn’t do anything and kept procrastinating while maintaining her sense of moral superiority. Alex on the other hand just went and did it. Her book is probably crap (but remember it is a self help book, and by definition those are crap), but she did was Betty didn’t have the guts to. She should only blame herself

The one driving a compact , Japanese or European car has a honors student for a son, the one driving a pickup truck has a son in jail. Is that profiling or stereotyping?

Classic problem. Betty is very self-conscious, and aware of the absurdity of the word. Reason why she often is a bit too much sarcastic. When she sees something ridiculous, she stays out of it. If she believes doing something would be absurd, she stops herself from doing it. Alex ignores ridicule, because she is absolutely self-confident. Which is a form of ignorance of course. But the result is that she is not able to perceive something as absurd or stupid and thus does it anyway. And if TV reality teaches us something, it is that no matter how stupid, lame, useless or shallow you are, if you believe people want to hear from you, you can become a hit.

If she looks like her mother, she probably messed up the drawing by making it not scary enough.

“Because I don’t think she did. All of this must have been going on prior to their getting together at WW… ;)”
She met Sun and Viper in Bernice’s room and they introduced themselves as Dez’ friends so she definitely knows two of them. She might have forgotten their names though.
