Odd that this is such an environmentally conscious comic and yet so many environmental deniers and-or rationalizers read it.

For a while the rabbits seemed to get it and were part of the world. The Overboard world is just what it is. The mice have a role even though there is a cat who hates mice or birds unless a baby mouse or bird is in trouble and then as much as he hates it he does the right thing. The dog hates the squirrels because they are squirrels and they harass him unless there is an emergency in which case the dog comes to the rescue. The sharks think of Nate as a great meal but get Nate within a mile of a shark net and he’s deep diving to cut it to pieces. A pirate grows vegetables knowing full well 95% will be stolen by rabbits but in the end he knows everyone is fed so he does his part.

The rabbits seem to be on the players out of sync with the niche?

“So he should be expected to adjust his lifestyle to accommodate them.”

Of course not but also why lead them on to think they matter in his life when so clearly they do not? We have this bad societal impulse to ‘fix people’ and while that is wrong is the target of being fixed knows it are they are any better for allowing it to continue? I am a pragmatist so I know I probably get 90% of this wrong but my thought have always been when you enter a relationship with someone you have a decision to make at some point; either it is worth pursuing or let it go but never just let them dangle because you are either unsure or maybe you are getting something from it than it is clearly not what they want.

elade: Even mature people can sometimes get overwhelmed by their feelings now and then. Even mature people sometimes behave irrationally or need some space.

Absolutely. For example ME comes to mind. I have spent a life with people telling me why am I not engaging people or becoming part of the ‘gang’ ‘team’ ‘group’ etc. Some people are social and some people are not. However that said when I see Piro’s behavior over the long term it seems as if he is selecting this attitude simply because it makes him feel an outsider. Now that is fine. However I do wonder at times if in many cases this whole persona of “I am not conforming” winds up being some alternative conformity merely but others are attracted to what they find ‘different’. You know the whole moth to the blue flame thing.

I knew a ‘faux Piro’ in university. After two years I asked him how he could handle the weight of being such a fraud since clearly this was not who he was and didn’t it become exhausting. He looked at me and quite succinctly said “I bang more chicks than any other guy in residence.”

Nice. I am the James Deen of fakes? Getting a bit deeper here than I am the author had in mind but hopefully you get my point.

Quick aside and not disagreeing with you but I am a school bus driver and all the 12 year olds and up do not sit there on the phone but rather are engaging with their peers on and off the bus. Not suggesting that they do not spend an inordinate amount of time on their phones, (you should see what happens if one of them forgets their phone on the bus “hello? Yes this President Biden here… I am told Aria left her phone on the bus… SHUT UP Kamala I don’t care what the Russians are doing this is important… so when you can get her phone back to her?”), but from what I see every day they seem to far prefer personal live and physical connections.

Mind you this whole ‘bad boy who doesn’t engage’ thing is getting a bit old. He’s with them when it suits him knowing full well who they are and what they are like and then out of nowhere he returns to ‘Lone Wolf’ mode. Seems a little immature.

When I got my license at 16, some 50 years ago, everyone I knew who was my age never drove unless it was only them and their mom. Dads did not surrender the driver seat.

So that night I drove to pick my dad up and instinctively got out of driver seat. He said “you passed right?” Yep I can legally drive now. “Then get back in the driver’s seat… my driving days are over!”

In 2004 Google surveyed girls aged 12-16 to test what they wanted most. No other factor even came close to “being famous” even if it was fame without wealth or lifestyle.

Let’s not forget that part of the motivation to go on the road was the rules imposed by Gunther’s mother and Mr. Gray. Nothing suggests that this has changed and it is doubtful that Gunther is about to stand up to them.

So would Bets go back to that?

I guess but they don’t seem to go hungry so they be that special class of pirates with ethics and humanity.
