Explaining a gag always squeezes the life out of it, but since you asked… “Mooch” has a similar meaning to the word “beg.” When Poncho begs, the cartoonist employs the word “mooch” to indicate that that is what he is doing, since it is a difficult concept to show in the artwork alone. This time, since Poncho isn’t present at the dinner table, he has to mooch by carrier pigeon. Funny now? Sorry….
