Surely the guy had plans to fish that day before the arrival of the wedding announcement in the mail.

Why can’t the couple get married on a weekday? Then youy can still go fishing on Saturday.
With the bonus of getting a day off work.

A wedding means free food and all you have to do is give them a toaster.

C’mon now, Fishing is SPECIAL!
Weddings are just another half-a-dozen-times in a lifetime event.
(Plus y’ gotta wear a TIE!)

@Leo Autodidact
I’d like to see that enforced.

I agree with ‘our hero’. The wedding is probably for his wife’s
third cousin’s second son. They probably wouldn’t be missed,
let alone even being noticed that they came!!

Why not get married at the lake and have a “fishing trip wedding?”
Works for me.

I try to stay away from weddings and funerals. I hate sad occasions!

Only go to weddings of people that got you a present last Christmas or birthday.

I’d HOPE that my husband would rather go to a wedding with me for special friends and / or relatives than do something as mundane as fishing — something he can do either the day before, the day after or the next weekend, etc. — but if it really meant THAT much to him, then I’d let him go fishing and I’d go to the wedding alone. I don’t believe in nagging. In the end, all you’ll have is a resentful spouse that will fight against you more and more as time goes by so that it will eventually be impossible to get them to agree to do anything needing to be done (no matter how big or small) simply because you ask them to.
There’s an old saying: “A happy wife is a happy life” . . . but I think a happy husband is JUST as important to having a happy life and marriage, as well!!!!! :-)

“..Only go to weddings of people that got you a present last Christmas or birthday..” AGREED. The wife can go as much as she wants. Weddings should also be after sunset. That keeps the day-light clear of obligations.

“…I’d HOPE that my husband would rather go to a wedding with me for special friends…” This is a ‘boy’ thing and a ‘girl’ thing situation. This is nothing personal. You are still loved. Try to imagine he is with you in spirit.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you give him a reason to sit in a boat all day drinking beer!
