How heavy is that catcher’s gear?
    How can he walk?

    And inattentive.

Mind you…I can’t see a ball in flight, either.

Where did Charlie Brown learn all those words?

Back in the old days, they used to call all that “catcher’s equipment” “The Tools of Ignorance” … not sure why I remember that. Now it just makes good sense to protect yourself.

One of the mysteries of “Peanuts” is how the horrible losing streak of Charlie Brown’s baseball team isn’t in any way connected to his hardheaded right fielder.

Back in the sixties, kids read books. Real classics, like Treasure Island and Jungle Book and White Fang and The Arabian Nights. Those books were not “for children” and didn’t have small vocabularies. It’s amazing what you can learn when you read authors who know how to handle the language.

Charlie Brown, you should watch My Fair Lady:

    Higgins:
    But women are irrational
That’s all there is to that
    Their heads are full
    of cotton, hay and rags
    They’re nothing
    but exasperating
    irritating, vacillating
    Calculating, agitating
    maddening and infuriating hags

This is a strip where the child characters are known to quote whole passages of the Bible from memory, and you ask where he learned a few hard words?

Don’t forget “Alice in Wonderland”. Anyone who thinks black comedy is a new concept or that Tim Burton’s movie was dark should read Carroll’s original version.

@pelican: which is why typically the biggest kid was the catcher. Plus he could block the plate and keep the ball from getting past

    He didn’t. Charles Schulz did.

I don’t suppose that ball will knock any sense into Lucy.
