    TC back in the day this was drawn, remotes hadnt been invented yet. TV’s has 13 cahnnels and you had to turn the knob to change them. And when you turned it on you had to wait for it to warm up.

    I remember that little white spot that grew or shrank when you turned it on or off. One thing I don’t miss is the sound of “snow” when you hit an unused channel number!

    Poor Linus…I had a brother like that. You had to pretend not to like a programme you were watching or he would change channels. Especially in the last 5 minutes of a mystery drama!

    Can you imagine Lucy after ten divorces?

    Linus, just turn it back on boy. When this was drawn we probably just had the three channels in the Uk. BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. Then came Channel 4 and later still Channel Five. Now after the satellite boom, hundreds of them, many with official viewing figures of zero.

    Zenith sold a tethered remote in 1950 until wireless remotes were introduced in 1955. This strip ran in 1965.

    Linus obviously is too young to know how to turn on the telly.

    @Top Cat

    I suspect Lucy would simply hide it in a seat cushion and make you flip’n crazy.

    Yeah, but the average person didn’t have a clue. I didn’t see my first remote TV until around 1978-ish, when I went with my grandmother to her housecleaning job and the homeowner had one. It was huge and had (I believe) 3 buttons: Channel up, channel down, and power.

    I always sat that close to the tube. I also had to be directly in front of it—annoyed my family.

    Yeah, you had channels 2 through 13 on one dial, then a UHF dial with channels 14 through…I dunno…99?

    I downsized the cable package at my Mom’s summer getaway to something like 25 channels this summer, and my wife complained that we should’ve kept the larger package. I replied “Do you remember when all we had was ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS and two independent stations? Somehow we survived.”

    People do forget.

    Go and read a book Linus. I probably should go read a book too.
