   IIRC, a hodad is a sort of hoodlum, non-surfer. I don’t think I’ve heard the term since the early ‘60s, and never before saw it in "print’. I didn’t know it was a widely used term outside of the South Bay area of Los Angeles.
   Jarred my memory—a good laugh.

   I didn’t mean to insult hodaddies, and apologize if I did in calling them “hoodlums.” This would mostly have been from the perspective of the surfers or those who hung around surfers.

    A “Hodad” is a person that hangs out at the beach but is not a surfer. Usually into fast cars but not always.
    There is even a couple of restaurants named Hodad’s
