"I think cartoonists should be like burrs under the saddle of some egomaniac, kind of gnawing away every day," says two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Szep. "I think the public likes cartoons because it gives them a vicarious pleasure that they normally can't get in any other way."

So far so good. He cares about the poor and is willing to say and do things to help them. Now he could, but probably won’t, go along with contraceptives and sex education that would also help the poor as well as the struggling middle class. The rcc is wealthy enough to give free union-made contraceptives to people who need them.

Ted Koppel always reminded me of Alfred E Newman.
I mean in that order: Newman was first. Koppel looks like Newman.

“Looks like Szep did his “likeness” from the old MAD Magazine guy Alfred E Newman.”
Howie, give the guy a break, its a polite caricature, it isn’t supposed to be a portrait. Aside from that we can’t see his teeth and he doesn’t have freckles. Geesh, lighten up…

The Vatican is now an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Bergoglio’s father emigrated from Italy in the 1920s, one of millions of Italians who moved to Argentina in search of a better life.
The new pope speaks fluent Italian, albeit with a slight Spanish intonation, and his links to Italy are thought to have smoothed his election in the secret conclave.
He is the third successive pope to come from outside Italy after centuries of Italian domination of the papacy.

It reminded me more of the Italian soccer player’s gesture to the referee after getting caught diving!

Yeah, okay, whatever. I finally I figured out how to post a picture on the site that is proper sized and all that so it’s been a very productive post.

Thanks so much, I’ll give it a try. If my poor little brain can manage all that stuff.

Now I’m just curious, because I’m not Catholic and the next pope has little impact on what I do next, so help me out here.
Given:
Most people in the West are in poverty because of generations of poor decision making.
Why, then, are contraceptives and the ability to kill and eat your young always the remedy sought, instead of self-control and delayed gratification that would not only eliminate the need to constantly demand that the church change its teaching, but have beneficial effects elsewhere in people’s lives?
