Yeah, and unexpected things happen. I remember an Oliphant cartoon from early 1969. Ted Kennedy was slouching against a wall — watching and waiting, suitcase in hand — while Nixon did his double-victory-sign shtick. Nixon was looking nervously over his shoulder, as if Kennedy would be a shoo-in for 1972.. Yeah, well … There was an the old “National Lampoon “ ad parody that said, “If Ted Kennedy had been driving a Volkswagen, he’d be president right now.” Hint: VWs were said to float if driven into the water..Sorry. It disgusted me then and it still disgusts me. But it was a shocking and valuable lesson in the vagaries and vicissitudes of fate.
