“Hey-o! Honest work! Get’yre honest work here! Hey-yo!… Ya know, captain, we’d get a bit more interest if we at least included a dental plan…”

Ben, saw your note from last week; can appreciate the “quiet” idea as an intro and outro for the chapters.
But if this is the first strip of chapter 2, it is hardly quiet. The artwork is terrific; esp. love the image of the Inn with the meramid over the horse shoe shaped door. In the old days of comics, your strip would have covered an entire page.
    Looking forward to more.

Yeah, it’s funny: as I was typing that I was thinking that this next chapter is one that just starts rolling with page one. And thanks for the kind words re. the artwork. I really do love throwing in little nautical details like the mermaid. I tend to add similar stuff to a lot of the furniture—insets with carved fish, whales, etc.

Well Captain, guess it’s time to check out the bottom of the barrel and start scraping.

Apparently in Blood’s Haven crime DOES pay…very well in fact.

    Love the story.
    They tried the able bodied.
Now the have go to "dregs"ing.
The not so able bodied of a more “crustier” reputation and demeanors.
This speaks of a really “good” (?) crew for the Layla.

You even got the language down to a tee.
    “gunn’ls” “needn’t” “t’come”
Beautiful. I can hear their accents as clearly as I read it.

I especially love the “one’d” usage in the sentence. Perfect simply perfect.

So far even the barrel scrapings are not there. Talk about a dry well. The least they could do is to match the pay or they won’t get but a very few idealists.

Oh these are not the barrel scrapings. The place is far too nice. Barrel scrapings are coming. You will see the difference. They will be the ones no respectable nor questionable character person would give a job.

Love the docks on the water and the mermaid at the door as a lampholder. Reminds me of Folly Beach before it became so commercial!

I love Folly Beach… although I’ve not been there in a long time. Back in the 90s when I was in a band we’d play there semi-regularly. It was absolutely one of our favorite spots to play.

I was back home on vacation 2 years ago and was surprised at how completely it has changed over the years. I miss the charm that used to be there many years ago – late 70s early 80s.
