I dunno Hammy, when I was in Scouts we were often told not to get our tail in a knot…

why would an atheist, or even an agnostic, want to belong to an organization founded on mysticism?

Not sure about the boy scouts proper, but I was in the cub scouts, and it was all about camping, survival/living skills, community work, crafts, and cooperation. There was little emphasis on religion. I couldn’t join the boy scouts bc of my atheism. :(

The Scouts teach service to your faith and tolerance for other faiths. I’ve never read any comments by an atheist that led me to believe he could do either.

    We tolerate other faiths.

You have no clue how much we have to tolerate faiths.

The organization emphasizes God to reinforce a prime teaching, that the scout is not the center of the universe, a common misperception/malady among atheists. Atheists are not bad people, but the needs of others are rarely within their sights; only rarely a problem among those who perceive a higher power. I know I prefer to be with believers – better humored.

So you would prefer to not tolerate anyone not like you.

I’m a bit curious about how many atheists some of you people know? They tolerate other faiths better than many who claim Christianity. They do not need god to tell them to donate their time and money to feeding and clothing the poor. They are actually very tolerant of many different types of people in general.

My hubby is an atheist, he not only loves his job helpping people fix their problems, he’s one of the most selfless people I know. Thing is, most atheists don’t speak up because they know they’ll be put down, ridiculed, or TOLD BY TOTAL STRANGERS WHAT THEYMUSTBELIVE becasue they’re too stupid to know what’s in their own heart.

I totally get him, I was a Catholic in the Deep South.
