Insects have exo-skeletons, so spraying not only will not work but will wreak havoc on the environment. Better to just step on them or, better yet, find their queen (the egg-laying machine) and get rid of her.
Making sure the honey jar doesn’t have honey on the cover or being careful to cover up the sugar will also help.
